Demonia Cult, also known as Demonia Goth Footwear, is a sub-brand under Dolls Kill specializing in alternative-styled footwear. My typeface will serve as a display font for their limited run collections. It will showcase these collections, as Demonia's typical font style is usually sketchy and dramatic. I found it intriguing to create a typeface tailored to display fonts, as I enjoy experimenting with attention-grabbing texts.
My approach aims to enhance the brand by designing a typeface that more effectively captures a ‘gothic’ appeal. The current display font (Special Elite) leans towards a sketchy aesthetic, which, rather than conveying a ‘gothic’ and Latin-script vibe, feels more playful, almost reminiscent of ‘Comic Sans.’ I want to change that by creating a typeface that truly reflects the essence of goth culture, allowing its dark, expressive qualities to stand out.
I designed this typeface using Adobe Illustrator and Glyphs. Initially, it took some time to understand how to transfer my sketches into the programs, but once I figured it out, the process became much smoother and more intuitive. Given my extensive experience with Illustrator, I found it easier to create the outlines there and then transfer them into Glyphs for further refinement. This workflow allowed me to clean up and enhance my typeface effectively, ensuring it met my vision for the final product.
