PAWA 2022
The purpose of this app is similar to that of Webtoon, Lezhin, and Tapas. It is meant to create a safe space for women and young girls, promoting comics and manga without the hypersexualization of female characters. Like on Webtoon, Lezhin and Tapas, content creators, illustrators and writers can upload their works and share them with the audience intended for this app. Essentially, this app will compete against the ones before it, however, it will be female-friendly, taking away from the usual “submissive” and “sexy” trope. Although the app is very similar to others, there is still a large gap in desirable female leads as opposed to male ones. I wanted to change this by creating an app that continues to portray them as desirable but in a respectful and considerate sense. I believe the creation of this app will be very successful as it leans into an untapped aspect of the market that has yet to be utilized - the perspective of women.
Dream it.
With my approach, I wanted to add onto this brand by creating a typeface that helps to better express a ‘gothic’ appeal. Their current display font (Special Elite) is more on the sketchy side, and instead of appearing ‘gothic’ and latin-script, it comes across as more playful and ‘comic sans’. I would like to change that and better the appearance by creating a typeface that allows the essence of goth culture to shine.
Build it.
I designed this typeface by using Adobe Illustrator and Glyphs. It took me a while to properly understand how to transfer my initial sketches into the programs but upon doing so, it all became easy. It was much simpler for me to do everything on Illustrator and transfer my outlines into Glyphs since my experience lies there. By doing this, I was able to clean up my typeface in Glyphs and enhance it.
This is a final play-through of how the app will function. It starts off with the home screen which gives the users a choice to sign up and log in to the app. If the user is prompted to sign up, they will have the option to personalize their homepage by choosing their favourite genre(s). More importantly, the app features a forum in which the members of the PAWA community can share their thoughts on the contents of the app or anything pertaining to it. This allows them (women in particular) to create a safe space.
