Make it stand out.

For class, I designed a poster for the Toronto Pride festival. Toronto Pride is a festival based in Toronto, Canada which Pride Toronto is an annual event held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, June each year. A celebration of the diversity of the LGBT community in the Greater Toronto Area, it is one of the largest organized gay pride festivals in the world, featuring several stages with live performers and DJs, several licensed venues, a large Dyke March, a Trans March and the Pride Parade.

Dream it.

Designing a poster that isn’t too cliché was hard. At first, I struggled with how I should represent the festival without making it come across as boring and already-done-before. As I started playing around, I finally decided on a ‘heart’ as the focal point and made everything around it an accessory that compliments the theme (#LOVEWINS). By doing this, it not only captures the audience’s attention but it also helps represent the festival through a symbol everyone associates with adoration and acceptance. Love is love!

Build it.

I used Illustrator to design this poster. Designing the poster wasn’t hard at first but once I started to play around with grids and rulers, I realized just how important it was to keep everything consistent. I added custom guides and made everything follow a straight line down the page. Designing something with visual appeal is mandatory but so is designing intellectually. By creating an invisible line that separates each category, it not only assists with the dynamic, but it also adds onto the design as a whole.
